Getting The Most Out Of Shipping

Shipping is one of those things we battle with all the time. Coffee is light for it's size and minimizing your shipping cost per pound can be difficult. We've recently updated our shipping options and we want to give you the information on how to best minimize your shipping costs.

Free Shipping

This is the best way to mitigate shipping costs. All orders over $70 qualify for free shipping.

Free Pickup

If you are in the Bay Area and want to pick up at our roastery in Emeryville, you can order online and select the free pickup option. When you are checking out, there is an option for "Delivery Method." Select "Pick Up" and it will auto select the option for Emeryville Roastery with $0 for shipping. We only do pickups in Emeryville, as that is our only location, there is no local pickup if you live outside of the Bay Area.

USPS Padded Envelope

So, you don't want to spend over $70 and you can't pick up, the next best option is the USPS Padded Envelope. This is a flat rate envelope that costs $9.65 regardless of the weight. It will hold up to 2 12oz bags, or one 2lb bag. Shipping for one 12oz bag is the same cost as shipping for two, so this is one of the best ways to make your shipping costs per pound the most efficient.

FedEx 2 Day Envelope

The next step above the USPS Padded Envelope is the FedEx 2 Day Envelope. This is a flat rate envelope that costs $11.25 regardless of the weight. It will hold up to four 12oz bags, or a 2lb bag and a 12oz bag. If you are ordering more than 2 pounds, this is one of the best ways to reduce your shipping costs per pound.

The In-Between

That leaves the window between four 12oz Bags and $70. In this range, it depends on where you live as to what will be the most efficient. Rates are calculated based on your address on the checkout page.

FedEx Home/Ground

FedEx residential delivery (FedEx Home Delivery) prices have increased a lot in the last few years, so if you can ship to a business or commercial address (FedEx Ground), that will save you money.

FedEx Smartpost

There is also the Smartpost option, which will work best for people on the West Coast. With this option, FedEx picks up the package from us and delivers it to the USPS to finish the delivery. This shipping option takes the most time, from 2-8 business days. FedEx does not deliver to PO Boxes, but since the USPS delivers Smartpost, you can ship to a PO Box with this method.

FedEx 2-Day Medium Box

The FedEx 2-Day Medium Box, which is $17.00, will be the best option the farther you get from California. This box holds the following:

  • 1x 5lb bag
  • 2x 2lb bag
  • 6x 12oz bag

Again you can use this to your advantage to maximize the bang for the buck of your shipping costs.

USPS Flat Rate Medium Box

The USPS Flat Rate Box is $16.10 and is best used when shipping to a PO Box or an APO/FPO address (overseas military shipments). It holds up to 5lbs, and is not the most efficient shipping option at this point. We are going to work with the USPS in the near future to get this rate lowered.

In Closing

Hopefully all of this information helps you make better decisions on how to get the most efficiency out of your shipping. We are continually working with our shipping vendors to get better rates and new options. We'll be looking into different options with the USPS soon, and we'll update this page as things change.
