Bali Kintamani Natural

Light Roast

Guava · Apricot Jam · Crisp Red Apple

Bali Kintamani Natural

We are thrilled to introduce the first McLaughlin Reserve release for 2026! This coffee is a juicy and fruity natural-processed coffee from the the Kintamani highlands of Bali. This special release coffee is complex and vibrant with a medium-light body. It has sweet tropical fruit acidity, slight tartness, and low bitterness. We chose this coffee for its unique fruitiness and we are really excited about the results!

The cup starts with light, sugary sweetness of guava. The tropical fruit sweetness is quickly overpowered in the middle of the cup by dense, rich notes of apricot jam. The jamminess lightens and lingers toward the finish and is joined by sweet and slightly tart notes of crisp red apple. The finish is light and sweet with the mouthfeel of having just taken a juicy bite of a cosmic crisp apple. This fruity complexity of this coffee is fascinating and we absolutely love the unique juicy apple finish.

This refreshingly fruity coffee from Bali will be available for about a month, so be sure to take advantage of this limited time offering!

Origin information

Bali Kintamani Natural is sourced from family owned farms located in the Kintamani highlands on the island province of Bali, Indonesia. Coffee is grown in the volcanic soils of Mount Agung along with citrus trees that provide shade and another source of income. Coffee production is typically organized around a Subak Abian, which refers to the ecologically sustainable irrigation systems developed more than 1,000 years ago by Hindu priests who practice Tri Hita Karana (the three sources of prosperity), a philosophy focused on the harmonization between the environment, humans and God.

The idea of this natural processed coffee was suggested when our importer, Royal Coffee, was on an origin trip in 2009. The suggestion to add a natural processed coffee both created a new offering and helped to address an issue of water scarcity. It was an easy step to drying whole ripe cherry given that raised beds were already used for drying parchment. The project has been fully implemented and the results have been exceptional.

There are many different varieties of coffee in the world. It is generally believed that Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee and that the Typica variety is the origin of countless varieties that exist today.

When coffee trees are transplanted and grown elsewhere, new varieties become established. These alterations can occur naturally by mutation or be cross-bred into hybrid varieties. Hybrids are crafted to utilize the most desirable characteristics of multiple coffee varieties, such as: disease resistance, drought tolerance, crop yield, tree height and most importantly flavor.

Measured in meters above sea level (masl), elevation is a contributing factor to a coffee's flavor profile and production. As elevation increases, you get cooler nights and sunny days which are beneficial for the trees and result in longer growth times. Additionally, at higher elevation, the volcanic soil tends to be more pure and contains a better concentration of minerals that coffee trees love. With slower development and nutrient rich soil, you get greater intensity of flavors in the final product.
